Marilyn Monroe (1 Juni 1926 - 5 Agustus 1962) yang terlahir dengan nama Norma Jeane Mortenson adalah seorang aktris, penyanyi dan juga model terkenal asal Amerika Serikat. Hingga saat ini, dia merupakan bintang film dan simbol seks paling terkenal pada abad ke 20. Sosoknya adalah inspirasi bagi banyak bintang-bintang baru pada masa kini seperti yang terlihat jelas pada diri Madonna di awal kariernya.
Setelah beberapa tahun memainkan peran-peran kecil, Marilyn Monroe menjadi semakin terkenal atas keahliannya bermain komedi, kecantikannya serta penampilannya di layar lebar, sehingga dia menjadi salah satu bintang film yang sangat populer pada tahun 1950an. Belakangan dalam kariernya, Marilyn Monroe melakoni beberapa peran serius yang cukup sukses. Namun begitu ia tidak sempat memperoleh Academy Award sebagai pengakuan dirinya sebagai aktris "serius", hanya Golden Globe yang pernah diraihnya lewat film "The Misfits" pada tahun 1961 yang ternyata merupakan film terakhir yang ia selesaikan.
Namun demikian, permasalahan yang menyangkut karier maupun kehidupan pribadinya menjadi semakin buruk dan rumit. Kehidupan Marilyn Monroe berakhir mengenaskan, dia ditemukan tewas di rumahnya yang dipercaya sebagai akibat tindakan bunuh diri karena overdosis meminum obat tidur. Hingga saat ini, berbagai teori konspirasi menyangkut kematian Marilyn masih menjadi pokok pembahasan khususnya bagi para penggemarnya mulai dari keterlibatan keluarga Kennedy untuk membunuh Marilyn sampai teori bahwa Marilyn Monroe dibunuh oleh Mafia.
Marilyn Monroe sendiri menjadi inspirasi bagi banyak musisi dalam berkarya misalnya Elton John yang menciptakan lagu "Candle in the Wind (1974)" maupun grup rock Def Leppard yang mendedikasikan lagu mereka "Photograph" dari album mereka "HYSTERIA" (1981) untuk sang legenda.
Sampai saat ini salah satu ikon pop yang paling dikenal dunia adalah sosok Marilyn yang berdiri di atas saluran udara subway dengan rok yang terkembang.
